I have always been drawn to landscape painting. In 2018 I moved to Cornwall to study Illustration at Falmouth University and post study my interest in landscapes continued to grow. Being immersed in Cornwall’s stunning scenery I continued to develop my techniques to capture my surroundings.
I have always found working plein air to be an incredibly enriching process. Painting on location gives you a narrow timescale to put down what you see, especially when focusing on subjects like the sea with constantly changing tides and shifting light. Working in this way has made me much more intuitive with my mark making, capturing the scenes in that moment.
I primarily use oils and a single brush to do this which creates interesting passages of paint as I work. My paintings use strong visible brush work to create grounded pieces focused on what I see. They are a physical response to my surroundings that day and my process creates honest representations of the places I paint.
Over the last couple of years I have been living on the Isles of Scilly, a source of rich visuals and sense of place. I feel very privileged to have been able to produce a collection of work on location to capture my own impression of these islands.
